Music at Asbury
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir is made up of about 20 singers of all ages, musical abilities and experiences. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings in the Sanctuary from 7:30-9:00PM. The Chancel Choir provides all the special music for worship as well as leading in the congregational singing of hymns and responses. They are also active performers in the Sanctuary Concert Series and are the nucleus for the COMMUNITY OUTREACH CHOIR performing two major concerts every season. New members are always welcome. Anyone who is high school age or older and has a desire to praise God with loud voices is encouraged to join us.
Asbury Community Outreach Choir
The Outreach Choir was formed in the fall of 2007 to present concerts featuring the hymns of Charles Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist Church. After that concert many members indicated an interest in keeping this choir together. The 60 voice choir, made up of singers of all ages from the Greater Norristown community, rehearses four times before a concert. The concerts are accompanied by an orchestra made up of musicians from all over the PA and NJ area. Our second concert, in May of 2008 featured music of Broadway shows. In November of 2008 we presented Handel’s MESSIAH. We are so thrilled to be able to present concerts of this magnitude to the Greater Norristown Community. In April of 2009 we will present THE MAJESTY AND GLORY OF THE RESURRECTION, a program of Lenten/Easter Hymns with orchestra. In November of 2009 we will present a concert of Great Hymns and Anthems of the Church. If you are interested in joining the choir for an upcoming concert, please e-mail the music director.
Sanctuary Concert Series
Asbury is thrilled to be able to offer this musical outreach to the community. The Sanctuary Concert Series is now in it's 7th Season. We present a concert once a month beginning in November and ending in May. The concerts are usually held on the second Sunday at 4PM. Check the schedule for exact times. All concerts are free and open to public. A time of refreshments and fellowship with the performers is held following each performance.
Bell Choir
The bell choir is under the direction of Carolyn Linarello. Asbury currently owns three (3) octaves of Malmark Handbells and three (3) octaves of Suzuki Choir Chimes also know as hand chimes.
If you are grade 3 to age 103 you are welcome to join the bell choir. There are two (2) advantages to ringing bells:
- You get to provide music for worship in a totally different context.
- This is the best part - you don’t need to know how to read music. All you need to know is how to count to three (3) or four (4).
If enough people show an interest, we will arrange a clinic to teach you everything you need to know about the art of handbell ringing.
If you have any questions, give us a call or send us an email at bellchoir@asbury-unitedmethodist.org.
Youth Choir
The Youth Choir is made up of about 10 very energetic young musicians. They currently rehearse on Sunday afternoons, from 12:30-1:15, as part of their MYF experience. The Youth Choir offers special music in church at least once a month.
